Please read the following case studies for some examples of how Student Select can help you.

Case Study #1 - Alex needs more than just hospitalization and outpatient surgery!

This fall, Alex will be attending college for the first time.  The location of his school is outside of the HMO network region of his parents' health insurance plan.  Alex's parents performed some research on the health insurance plan offered through his college, but they discovered that it was extremely limited and had numerous constraints on very basic coverage.

The Solution to Alex's Dilemma:

Student Select from Assurant Health is a perfect fit for Alex's circumstances because not only does it provide access several different choices of deductibles, but it also affords him more extensive coverage without the limitations of an HMO or PPO.  The Student Select plan makes up to $1 million in protection for eligible expenses, including hospitalization, outpatient surgery, and emergency care.

Case Study #2 - "Lynn is a college student, not a millionaire!"

The college that Lynn will be attending next semester requires that all student have some form of medical coverage by the first day of classes.  She is in a quandary.  She doesn't have health insurance through her parents and the cost of a traditional individual health insurance plan is just too high.  Lynn doesn't want to take the risk of going without coverage, but she has a tight budget.

The Solution to Lynn's Dilemma:

Student Select typically costs less than a traditional individual health insurance plan while still providing quality coverage while still in school.  Enrollment is simple and premiums are affordable, allowing Lynn meet her insurance needs while staying inside her financial constraints.

Situation #3 - "Just when I'm getting on my own two feet is when I need coverage the most"

William is about to have his 24th birthday and has just discovered that at that point, he will no longer be eligible for health insurance coverage through his parents.  Since William is still in school as a graduate student, he and his parents are both concerned about what will happen to him if he needs medical care before he graduates and is able to get group health insurance from an employer.

The Solution to William's Dilemma:

Not only is Student Select available to undergraduate students, but it is available for full time graduate students as well.  Student Select coverage can have an effective date as early as within 24 hours of the completion of the student's application.  One of Student Select's best features is the fact that all policies are guaranteed renewable. This translates into the safety of being able to keep the plan as long as necessary as long as the premiums are paid and that William attended school full time for 31 days after the policy effective date. This can be an invaluable resource for him during the transition from college to employment.

Who can purchase Student health insurance?

n order to purchase a Student Select insurance plan from Assurant Health, you must be an eligible college student between the ages of 17 and 29. Eligibility is determined by the number of credit hours being carried. Usually, an undergraduate student must be taking at least nine credit hours and a graduate student must meet the graduate student guidelines of his or her particular college or university for full-time student status. Additionally, Student Select is only available to students attending a state-accredited college or university in the United States.

NOTE: Since some schools operate on a quarterly schedule where full-time undergraduate status is considered to be six to eight credits per term, there is an exception to the nine-credit hour rule. If your school runs on a quarterly schedule, you should attach documentation of this to your completed application and confirm in writing that you are meeting the school's definition of full-time status.

Absolutely not. Using Compare-Health-Quotes.com is a safe, easy method of finding the best health insurance plan for your individualized needs. You may cancel your plan at any time, even during the underwriting process and up to ten days after you actually receive your policy. Although you will provide payment information while completing your application, most insurance companies won't charge your account until you are approved. Due to insurance company policy, these fees are generally non-refundable.

How do I decide whether it is best to buy a Student Select plan or keep my child on my family plan?

In order to make the best decision for your circumstances, it is important to consider several factors. If one or more of the following items applies to your situation, Student Select may be a valuable investment for you:

  1. The HMO or PPO network for your insurance plan does not extend to the area around your child's college.
  2. Your child is, or will soon be, 24 years of age, which frequently translates into no longer being eligible for health insurance coverage under a parent's plan. There are exceptions, but you should check with your insurance company to determine the specific age limits for your current policy.
  3. It is less expensive to purchase a Student Select plan than to continue paying for coverage under your current plan. The easiest way to determine if this is the case, get a quote for the Student Select plan of your choice on Compare-Health-Quotes.com user friendly quote search engine and then compare that price with how much you currently pay for your child's portion of health insurance coverage.

On the other hand, if you are currently satisfied with the coverage, cost, and benefits of your current medical plan, a Student Select plan may not be the right choice for you. Additionally, it is important to note that if your child has a pre-existing medical condition, expenses relating to that condition will not be covered by the Student plan until the policy has been in effect for 12 months.

Am I only covered while school is in session?

Student Select health insurance plans cover students both during the term and year round. If you unexpectedly have to leave school, your coverage will stay and is still guaranteed renewable as long as you have attended at least 31 days of school after the policy's effective date and your premiums have been paid.

Will I be covered when I go out of state?

You will be covered when you travel anywhere in the United States, its possessions and Canada. Although it does not cover you while traveling abroad, Student Select will cover you for an emergency medical evacuation to the United States or a medical facility operating within U. S. standards.

What happens if I transfer schools?

Transferring from one school to another has no effect on your Student Select coverage whatsoever as long as that school is in the United States, its possessions, or Canada.

What if I drop a class, graduate, or drop out of school altogether?

Your Student Select coverage will remain exactly the same as long as:

  • You met the definition of an eligible student on the date the application was signed;
  • You attended school full-time for 31 days after the policy effective date; and
  • The premium is paid in full.
Once you have obtained the policy and continue to pay the premiums, Student Select is available to you for as long as necessary.

Do I have to wait until I am enrolled in classes to apply for a Student Select plan?

Application for a Student Select plan can occur as soon as you are enrolled as an eligible student. However, it is important to remember that the full premium is due with the submission of your completed application. As soon as your Student Select plan is issued, it will be sent to you, but please note that 60 days or less before the requested effective date is the preferred timeframe for completion of the application.

When does my coverage begin?

The effective date of your plan depends on your method of payment. If you apply online and use a credit card, your coverage can begin as early as 24 hours later, provided that all other eligibility criteria have been met. If you apply by completing an application and mailing it along with a check payment, the earliest that your coverage will begin is the day after the postmark date, assuming you have met all other eligibility criteria.
You also have the option of selecting a coverage start date up to 60 days in the future with the exception of the 29th, 30th, or 31st of a month. Please note that although credit card payments are the fastest way to begin coverage, you may still obtain a Student Select plan without using that form of payment.

  1. You met the definition of an eligible student on the date the application was signed;
  2. You attended school full-time for 31 days after the policy effective date; and
